How long does a paver patio last?

The short answer: a properly built paver patio lasts decades — often 25 to 50 years or more. But ‘properly built’ is carrying real weight in that sentence. Here's what determines a patio's lifespan.

Decades — if the base is right

Concrete pavers are extremely durable; the material isn't usually what fails. What determines lifespan is what's underneath and how it's maintained. A patio on a proper compacted base, graded for drainage, stays flat and tight for decades. A patio on a shortcut base can start heaving and separating within a few years, no matter how good the pavers look. The lifespan gap between a well-built and a poorly built paver patio is enormous — and it all comes down to work you can't see.

What actually decides how long it lasts

  • The base — proper excavation depth and compaction is the single biggest factor. Most early failures are base failures.
  • Drainage — water is what wrecks patios. Grading that moves water away keeps the base stable.
  • Freeze-thaw handling — in Missouri, the ground swells and shifts through winter. A flexible paver system on a good base rides that out; a rigid or poorly built one doesn't.
  • Installation quality — proper edge restraints and joint sand keep pavers locked in place instead of drifting.
  • Maintenance — occasional re-sanding of joints and the odd reset keeps a patio tight for the long haul.

Why pavers age better than concrete

Because pavers are modular, aging is graceful and fixable. A settled area gets lifted and reset. A stained paver gets swapped. Joint sand gets refreshed. You maintain a paver patio piece by piece instead of facing the all-or-nothing replacement a cracked concrete slab forces. That's a big part of why a paver patio's usable lifespan runs so long.

Bottom line

Expect decades from a paver patio built on a proper base — and much less from one that isn't. When you're comparing quotes, you're really comparing lifespans: the base and drainage are what you're paying for.
